About this item
- Viburnum suspensum is a handsome evergreen with a spreading habit and coarse texture. It has an attractive compact form growing to 6-12 ft (1.8-3.7 m) in height with about an equal spread if left untrimmed. The coarse leaves are dark green and densely cover the shrub.
- In late winter and sporadically throughout the spring and summer the sandanqua produces small waxy tubular flowers held in tight panicles (flower cluster) that are 1.5 inches diameter. Flowers are white with pinkish tints and give way to small round red berries in autumn.
- Sandanqua viburnum is an evergreen shrub that is great for hedges and screening in warmer zones. This southern Japanese native is tremendously versatile. It tolerates both moderate drought and wet soils in full sun and part shade exposures. It has a dense, upright growth habit with dark green leaves. It does flower with pale pink clusters, but may have a fragrance some find disagreeable.
- For best growth as a dense screen or hedge, plant Sandanqua viburnum in full sun in a moist, well drained soil. Its growth will be fast. It tolerates conditions near building foundations. With its good green foliage, this species is a great background plant for shorter, more colorful or wispy palms, shrubs and perennials.
- Viburnum Suspensum bloom from early spring through late summer. Their flowers are small, and tubular, with a light pink or white color that shows up well against the dark foliage. After summer has passed, these flowers give way to small red berries that are favorites of songbirds. They are easy growers, thriving in most soil types, and are an ideal choice for shady areas where other viburnum might languish.
